What's Happening?
The United States is intensifying efforts to secure its rare-earth mining and processing capabilities, primarily due to China's overwhelming control of the global market. China currently dominates 70% of rare-earth mining and 90% of processing, which
grants it significant leverage in international negotiations. In response, the U.S. has entered into a strategic partnership with MP Materials, the only fully integrated Western rare-earth producer, which operates the largest rare-earth mine in the U.S. at Mountain Pass. This partnership includes a price floor agreement for MP's neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr) products, crucial for manufacturing rare-earth magnets used in electric vehicles, robotics, and defense. The U.S. government has committed to purchasing these products at a minimum price of $110 per kilogram, a move designed to protect MP Materials from being undercut by foreign competitors.
