Maestro Stilian Kirov, the Gibb Music Director of the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO), has been awarded the title of 2026 Conductor of the Year (Professional) by the Illinois Council of Orchestras. Kirov has held the position of Gibb Music Director since
the 2017-2018 season. This accolade marks the first time Kirov has received this honor and only the second time an IPO maestro has been recognized with this award, the first being Carmon DeLeone in 1985. The Illinois Council of Orchestras annually acknowledges excellence in music performance and support for musical organizations. The selection process involves a panel of judges from the Illinois Council of Orchestras Board of Directors and independent arts organizations, who review nominations from orchestras, youth orchestras, and chamber ensembles across Illinois. Kirov, a graduate of The Juilliard School's orchestral conducting program, has also been a recipient of multiple Solti Foundation U.S. Career Assistance Awards and has performed at the Berlin Philharmonie.
