What's Happening?
A collaborative research team from Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) and POSTECH has developed a fully automated roll-to-roll manufacturing platform capable of producing large-area visible metalenses at a rate of 300 units per second. This breakthrough addresses
significant technical barriers that have previously hindered the commercialization of metalenses. Metalenses are flat, ultrathin optical components that offer a compact and lightweight alternative to traditional lenses. The team utilized a custom-built roll-to-roll nanoimprint lithography system, achieving a feature resolution down to 80 nm. This system operates at a 12-inch scale and significantly increases production speed compared to conventional methods. The process involves creating a flexible polymer replica mold, which reduces production costs and time by eliminating the need for electroformed nickel shims. The replicated metalenses are coated with a high-index titanium dioxide layer to enhance optical performance. This development marks a significant step towards the industrial deployment of metasurface technology.
