What's Happening?
Maersk's APM Terminals has acquired a 49 percent minority shareholder and operating partner position in the Hai Phong International Container Terminal in North Vietnam. This strategic location is noted for its rapid growth and is part of the Gemini Cooperation's
East-West network. The terminal, located in Lach Huyen port, Haiphong City, is close to Hanoi and industrial regions in the north. It has been operational since July 2025, demonstrating high berth productivity. APM's partnership with Vietnam's Hateco, announced in March 2023, involves developing two deep-water berths capable of accommodating large container vessels.
Why It's Important?
This investment by APM Terminals underscores the strategic importance of Vietnam in global shipping and logistics. By enhancing its presence in Vietnam, Maersk strengthens its position in the Asia-Pacific region, a critical area for trade and economic growth. The terminal's capacity to handle large vessels boosts Vietnam's role as a key player in international shipping, potentially increasing trade volumes and economic activity in the region. This move aligns with Maersk's broader strategy to expand its terminal operations and infrastructure capabilities globally.
