What's Happening?
A recent report highlights the growing impact of donor-advised funds (DAFs) on nonprofit revenue. According to the DAF Research Collaborative, total assets in DAFs reached $327.87 billion in fiscal year 2024, marking a 27.9% increase from the previous
year. Contributions into DAFs hit a record $90.57 billion in 2024, a 38.6% year-over-year increase. The report, authored by Chariot and K2D Strategies, emphasizes the importance of strategic marketing in maximizing DAF returns. It notes that two-thirds of DAF gifts are under $1,000, underscoring the need for nonprofits to incorporate DAF messaging into mass market channels like mail, email, and SMS. The report also highlights the International Rescue Committee's success in treating DAFs as an organization-wide priority, which has led to significant revenue growth.
Why It's Important?
The rise in DAF contributions represents a significant shift in how donors are choosing to support nonprofits. This trend is crucial for the nonprofit sector as it provides a substantial source of funding that can be strategically leveraged through targeted marketing efforts. The report indicates that nonprofits can benefit greatly when supporters switch to DAFs, with nearly half of existing donors more than doubling their annual giving. This shift could lead to increased financial stability for nonprofits, allowing them to expand their programs and services. However, the report also highlights challenges such as limited data on DAF gifts and the need for improved donor management processes.
What's Next?
Nonprofits are likely to continue refining their strategies to better engage with DAF donors. This may involve developing more sophisticated data management systems to track and analyze DAF contributions effectively. Additionally, organizations might increase their focus on cross-departmental collaboration to maximize the potential of DAFs. As the popularity of DAFs grows, nonprofits will need to adapt their fundraising strategies to ensure they can capture and sustain this valuable source of revenue.
