What's Happening?
American Rare Earths, a company focused on critical minerals, has been chosen to supply feedstock to the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Minerals to Materials Supply Chain Research Facility, known as METALLIC. This initiative aims to establish new domestic
supply chains for critical minerals and materials. In December 2025, American Rare Earths provided METALLIC with approximately five tonnes of allanite ore from its Cowboy State mine test pit, part of the Halleck Creek Rare Earths Project in Wyoming. The METALLIC consortium is leveraging the research capabilities of nine U.S. laboratories to develop domestic technologies for commercializing critical minerals and materials. The Cowboy State Mine is a key source of feedstock for this program, and METALLIC is utilizing American Rare Earths' mineral processing methods in its research.
Why It's Important?
The selection of American Rare Earths by the DOE underscores the strategic importance of developing domestic supply chains for critical minerals, which are essential for various high-tech and clean energy applications. This collaboration could enhance the United States' ability to secure a stable supply of rare earth elements, reducing reliance on foreign sources. The involvement of leading DOE scientists in processing the ore could lead to more efficient and cost-effective methods for capturing and refining magnetic rare earth elements. This initiative aligns with broader national efforts to bolster supply chain security and technological independence in critical sectors.
What's Next?
As the METALLIC consortium continues its research, the focus will likely be on refining and commercializing the technologies developed for processing critical minerals. The success of this program could lead to increased investment in domestic mining and processing capabilities, potentially spurring economic growth in regions like Wyoming. Additionally, the outcomes of this research may influence future policy decisions regarding critical mineral supply chains and national security. Stakeholders, including government agencies and private companies, will be closely monitoring the progress and results of this initiative.
