What's Happening?
Steve McQueen, the renowned artist and filmmaker, is set to release a new book collection featuring photographs from his 'Bounty' exhibition series. The book, also titled 'Bounty', will be published by MACK and includes 47 images that McQueen captured
on the Caribbean island of Grenada. These images, taken during a trip in the summer of 2024, focus on the island's flora and serve as a reflection on the island's history of colonialism and slavery. McQueen's work highlights the paradox of beauty in a landscape marked by historical trauma. The book will also feature a new written piece by writer and poet Dionne Brand, as well as a poem by the late Saint Lucian writer Derek Walcott, titled 'The Bounty'. This poem, first published in 1997, is an elegy to Walcott's mother and was part of his ninth solo poetry collection.
Why It's Important?
The publication of McQueen's 'Bounty' book is significant as it brings attention to the complex history of Grenada through the lens of art. By focusing on the island's natural beauty juxtaposed with its colonial past, McQueen's work invites reflection on the enduring impacts of historical injustices. This collection not only enriches the cultural discourse around post-colonial narratives but also highlights the role of art in addressing and acknowledging historical trauma. The inclusion of works by Dionne Brand and Derek Walcott further emphasizes the importance of literary and artistic collaboration in exploring themes of identity, memory, and resilience.
What's Next?
The release of the 'Bounty' book coincides with McQueen's first solo exhibition in the Netherlands, titled 'Atlas', which will be held at the De Pont Museum in Tilburg from March 21, 2026, to August 30, 2026. This exhibition will provide an opportunity for audiences to engage with McQueen's work in a broader context, potentially sparking discussions on the intersections of art, history, and social justice. As the book becomes available, it may also inspire further academic and artistic exploration of Grenada's history and its representation in contemporary art.
