What's Happening?
The Gonzaga women's basketball team, led by Coach Lisa Fortier, has successfully retained the majority of its roster as the transfer portal closed on April 20, 2026. Despite concerns about potential losses, only two players entered the transfer portal,
neither of whom were key contributors last season. This positions the team favorably as they prepare to enter the Pac-12 conference for the 2026-27 season. The team will return four starters and six of their top seven scorers, including standout players like Lauren Whittaker and Allie Turner. Whittaker, who was named both WCC Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year, will be a key player next season. The team also welcomes newcomer Abby Lusk, a promising forward from Pocatello, Idaho.
Why It's Important?
Retaining the core roster is crucial for Gonzaga as they transition into the more competitive Pac-12 conference. The stability provided by returning key players like Whittaker and Turner ensures that the team can build on their previous successes, including a WCC Tournament championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance. This continuity is expected to enhance team chemistry and performance, providing a strong foundation for competing at a higher level. Additionally, the ability to keep the team intact amidst the challenges of the transfer portal era highlights the program's appeal and the effectiveness of Coach Fortier's leadership.
What's Next?
With the transfer portal closed, Gonzaga has four open roster spots to potentially fill before the next season. The team is likely to focus on adding guards to complement their strong frontcourt, which includes returning players and newcomer Abby Lusk. The coaching staff will aim to find players who can contribute depth and perimeter shooting, which will be essential for success in the Pac-12. The upcoming season will test the team's ability to adapt to a new conference, and their performance will be closely watched as they aim to establish themselves as a competitive force.
