What's Happening?
Pre-Met, a Redditch-based metal pressing and stamping specialist, has announced a significant investment of over £150,000 to enhance its in-house toolroom capabilities. This investment is directed towards acquiring an additional AgieCharmilles wire erosion machine, which will enable the company to produce larger tools and achieve more precise cuts. This move comes on the heels of a recent £500,000 investment at its Studley Road factory, which facilitated the integration of Quality Springs & Pressings into its operations. The toolroom, described as the 'heartbeat' of the business by Toolroom Manager Matt Harrison, is set to benefit from faster turnaround times and greater control over complex tooling builds. The expansion is driven by new contracts
in the defence, construction, and transport sectors, necessitating involvement from the design stage. Pre-Met is also focusing on workforce development, hiring a new tool maker and seeking a tooling design engineer to bolster its skilled team.
Why It's Important?
This investment underscores Pre-Met's commitment to maintaining its competitive edge in the metal pressing and stamping industry. By enhancing its toolroom capabilities, the company is better positioned to meet the demands of new contracts, particularly in the defence, construction, and transport sectors. The ability to produce larger and more precise tools will likely attract more business opportunities, reinforcing Pre-Met's role as a critical supplier in these industries. Additionally, the focus on workforce development highlights the company's dedication to preserving the craft of tool making, which is essential for sustaining production effectiveness and innovation. This strategic move not only supports Pre-Met's growth ambitions but also contributes to the broader manufacturing sector by setting a benchmark for investment in technology and skills.
What's Next?
As Pre-Met continues to expand its toolroom capabilities, the company is expected to further explore opportunities in the defence, construction, and transport sectors. The new wire erosion machine will integrate with existing equipment, enhancing the company's ability to undertake complex tooling projects from the design stage. The ongoing recruitment of skilled personnel, such as a tooling design engineer, will be crucial in supporting this expansion. Pre-Met's recent listing on JOSCAR, a global best practice supplier portal, may also open doors to additional contracts with major OEMs and tier 1 suppliers across the UK and Europe. The company is likely to continue its trajectory of growth and innovation, leveraging its enhanced capabilities to secure a stronger foothold in the global market.
