What's Happening?
Allison Belan, previously the director of strategic innovation and services at Duke University Press, has been appointed as the new executive director of the Book Industry Study Group (BISG). She will succeed Brian O'Leary, who is retiring after a decade
of leadership. Belan is set to join BISG on June 22, ahead of O'Leary's retirement on June 30. During her 22-year tenure at Duke University Press, Belan was responsible for technology operations and publishing infrastructure, as well as the launch and management of the Scholarly Publishing Collective. Her appointment is seen as a strategic fit for BISG, given her extensive experience in supply chain, metadata, rights management, and other core topics relevant to the organization.
Why It's Important?
Belan's appointment is significant for the book industry as BISG plays a crucial role in addressing challenges and fostering innovation within the publishing supply chain. Her experience in technology and publishing infrastructure is expected to enhance BISG's efforts in improving interoperability and standards development. This leadership change comes at a time when the industry is navigating digital transformation and evolving distribution models. Belan's expertise could drive forward BISG's 'Book Publishing Next' plan, which aims to modernize the supply chain, potentially benefiting publishers, distributors, and retailers by streamlining operations and improving efficiency.
What's Next?
As Belan transitions into her new role, BISG members will have opportunities to meet her in the coming weeks. The organization is expected to continue its remote work model, which has been in place for its three-person staff. Belan's leadership will likely focus on implementing the 'Book Publishing Next' plan, which could involve engaging with key stakeholders across the industry to address current challenges and future opportunities. Her ability to connect with C-suite decision-makers and other industry leaders will be crucial in driving BISG's strategic initiatives forward.
