What's Happening?
Deezer has announced that 44% of the music uploaded to its platform daily is generated by artificial intelligence. This equates to approximately 75,000 AI-generated tracks per day, totaling over two million per month. Despite the high volume of uploads,
AI-generated music accounts for only 1-3% of total streams on the platform. Deezer has identified that 85% of these streams are fraudulent and has taken steps to demonetize them. The company has been proactive in tagging AI-generated tracks since January 2025, and these tracks are excluded from algorithmic recommendations and editorial playlists. Deezer's CEO, Alexis Lanternier, emphasized the importance of safeguarding artists' rights and promoting transparency for fans. The company has also conducted a survey revealing that 97% of participants could not distinguish between AI-generated and human-made music.
Why It's Important?
The rise of AI-generated music presents significant challenges and opportunities for the music industry. On one hand, it offers new creative possibilities and efficiencies in music production. On the other hand, it raises concerns about the authenticity of music and the potential for fraud. Deezer's efforts to identify and label AI-generated music aim to protect artists' rights and ensure fair compensation. The prevalence of AI-generated music also highlights the need for industry-wide standards and regulations to address these issues. As AI technology continues to advance, the music industry must adapt to maintain the integrity of its content and the trust of its consumers.
What's Next?
Deezer's proactive measures set a precedent for other streaming platforms to follow. As AI-generated music becomes more prevalent, it is likely that other companies will adopt similar technologies to detect and manage AI content. The industry may also see increased collaboration between streaming services, artists, and regulators to develop comprehensive guidelines for AI-generated music. Additionally, there may be further advancements in AI detection technology to improve accuracy and reduce false positives. The ongoing dialogue between stakeholders will be crucial in shaping the future of music in the age of AI.
