US agricultural technology company NuCicer has partnered with Stricks Ag, a specialty pulse supplier, to commercialize a high-protein chickpea variety. This collaboration will involve planting over 10,000 acres of the chickpea in the 2026 growing season.
The crop will be produced through Stricks Ag’s grower network and processed at its existing facilities, establishing a supply chain aimed at large-scale ingredient supply. NuCicer developed this chickpea variety using a predictive breeding platform to enhance traits such as nutrient density, flavor, and agronomic performance. The chickpea reportedly contains about twice the protein and lower fat levels compared to conventional varieties. It is targeted at manufacturers seeking higher-protein formulations for products like pasta, bakery items, and snack foods. Stricks Ag will manage production, primary processing, and market development, leveraging its established relationships with growers and food manufacturers.
