Ericsson has implemented a private 5G network at Newmont's Cadia mine in New South Wales, Australia, to enhance the efficiency and safety of mining operations. The introduction of 5G technology allows
for the remote operation of a fleet of dozers, which are used in a tailings dam remediation project. This project became necessary after seismic activity in 2018 caused containment loss, requiring the construction of stabilizing buttresses. The 5G network provides significant improvements over previous Wi-Fi and 4G systems, offering better coverage, higher uplink capacity, and improved energy efficiency. These advancements enable the simultaneous operation of more machinery, reducing downtime and increasing productivity.
