What's Happening?
Erik Per Sullivan, known for his role as Dewey in the original 'Malcolm in the Middle' series, has declined an offer to return for the Hulu revival of the show. Despite being offered substantial financial incentives, Sullivan has chosen to focus on his academic
pursuits, currently working towards a master's degree at Harvard University. The revival, titled 'Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair,' will feature the return of other original cast members, including Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, and Jane Kaczmarek. Sullivan's role will be taken over by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, marking his first major leading role. The series is set to release on Hulu on April 10.
Why It's Important?
Sullivan's decision highlights a significant shift from his early career in acting to a focus on education, illustrating the diverse paths former child actors can take. His choice not to return to acting, despite lucrative offers, underscores the value he places on academic achievement over financial gain. This move may inspire other actors to consider alternative career paths beyond the entertainment industry. The revival of 'Malcolm in the Middle' without one of its original stars may affect the show's reception, as fans of the original series may miss Sullivan's presence.
