What's Happening?
Cobham Satcom has unveiled its new SAILOR 7200 terminal, designed to expand options for next-generation Global Maritime Distress & Safety System (GMDSS) services. This terminal will be showcased at Posidonia 2026 in Athens. The SAILOR 7200 is notable
for supporting both Inmarsat and Iridium Certus services, providing shipowners and operators with flexibility in implementing GMDSS services across their fleets. The terminal integrates GMDSS, Ship Security Alert System (SSAS), and Long-Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) functionalities into a single platform. It features a compact, omni-directional antenna that simplifies installation and reduces crew training requirements. Cobham Satcom has a long history in maritime safety communications, dating back to the establishment of Inmarsat in 1979, and has deployed over 300,000 SAILOR maritime L-band antennas globally.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of the SAILOR 7200 terminal is significant as it enhances maritime safety by offering global coverage, including polar regions, through Iridium's LEO constellation. This development allows for greater flexibility and independence for ship operators, who can now choose between different satellite networks without being locked into a single provider. The terminal's design aims to lower the total cost of ownership and simplify compliance with GMDSS regulations, which is crucial for maintaining safety standards in the maritime industry. By supporting both major satellite safety service ecosystems, Cobham Satcom strengthens its position in the market and provides a critical tool for improving maritime safety and operational efficiency.
