What's Happening?
Bose has announced that it will open-source the Application Programming Interface (API) for its SoundTouch speakers, providing a solution for users as the devices approach their end-of-life (EoL) on February
18. Initially, Bose had stated that these Wi-Fi speakers and soundbars would lose cloud connectivity and the functionality of their companion app, effectively turning them into 'dumb' speakers unless connected via AUX, HDMI, or Bluetooth. This decision had frustrated many long-time customers who own multiple SoundTouch devices, which were originally priced between $399 and $1,500. However, Bose has now confirmed that AirPlay and Spotify Connect will continue to function on these devices post-EoL, allowing users to maintain some wireless capabilities. Additionally, SoundTouch devices that support AirPlay 2 will be able to play the same audio simultaneously.
Why It's Important?
This development is significant as it addresses customer concerns about the longevity and usability of expensive electronic products. By open-sourcing the API, Bose is allowing third-party developers and tech-savvy users to potentially extend the functionality of these devices beyond the company's official support. This move could set a precedent for other companies facing similar EoL situations, encouraging them to consider open-source solutions as a way to maintain customer satisfaction and product utility. For users, the continued support for AirPlay and Spotify Connect means they can still enjoy modern streaming capabilities without needing to invest in new hardware, which is particularly important given the high initial cost of these devices.
What's Next?
Bose plans to update the SoundTouch app on May 6, 2026, to support functions that can operate locally without cloud connectivity. This update will be applied automatically when users open the app, ensuring that some level of functionality is retained. The open-sourcing of the API may also lead to community-driven enhancements or new features, as developers explore the possibilities of the platform. Customers and tech enthusiasts will likely watch closely to see how the open-source community responds and whether other companies will adopt similar strategies for their legacy products.
