What's Happening?
Qween Jean, a costume designer, has created approximately 500 looks for 'Cats: The Jellicle Ball,' which opens on Broadway after a successful off-Broadway run. Directed by Zhailon Levingston and Bill Rauch, this new interpretation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's
classic 'Cats' incorporates elements of New York City ballroom culture, with the feline characters engaging in vogueing and dance competitions. Jean's designs reflect the vibrancy and creativity of ballroom culture, drawing inspiration from historical research and collaboration with performers.
Why It's Important?
The reimagining of 'Cats' through the lens of ballroom culture is significant as it highlights the rich history and influence of Black and brown, queer, and trans communities in New York City. By integrating these cultural elements into a mainstream Broadway production, the show promotes diversity and inclusivity in the arts. Jean's work not only celebrates the legacy of ballroom culture but also challenges traditional narratives, offering audiences a fresh perspective on a classic musical. This approach may inspire future productions to embrace cultural diversity and representation.
