What's Happening?
20th Century Studios has announced the acquisition of theatrical film rights to '99 Nights in the Forest,' a popular action-survival game hosted on the Roblox platform. Developed by Grandma’s Favourite Games, the game challenges players to survive 99 nights
in a haunted forest while rescuing lost children and evading dangerous creatures. The game has quickly risen in popularity, becoming the seventh most-played game on Roblox with a peak player count of 14.2 million. The founders of Grandma’s Favourite Games, Alec Kieft, Matthew Hufton, and Cameron Angland, will serve as executive producers for the film. The deal was overseen by J.R. Young for 20th Century, with Michelle Kamme leading the competitive bidding process.
Why It's Important?
The acquisition of '99 Nights in the Forest' by 20th Century Studios highlights the growing trend of adapting popular video games into films, a move that can potentially tap into the existing fan base of the game. This strategy not only broadens the audience for the film but also leverages the game's established popularity to ensure a strong market presence. For 20th Century Studios, this represents an opportunity to expand its portfolio with content that appeals to younger audiences familiar with the Roblox platform. The collaboration with Grandma’s Favourite Games also underscores the studio's commitment to working with innovative creators who bring fresh, cinematic ideas to the table.
What's Next?
As the project moves forward, the next steps will likely involve attaching a writer and director to the film. The development process will focus on translating the game's immersive and interactive experience into a compelling cinematic narrative. Given the game's success and the studio's resources, there is potential for the film to become a significant release, attracting both fans of the game and new audiences. The involvement of Grandma’s Favourite Games as executive producers suggests that the film will stay true to the original game's vision, potentially setting a precedent for future game-to-film adaptations.
