What's Happening?
Mineral Resources (MinRes) has resumed operations at its Bald Hill lithium mine in Western Australia after an 18-month hiatus. The decision follows a significant recovery in lithium prices, prompting the company to restart production. The Bald Hill mine,
located 50 km southeast of Kambalda, has a production capacity of 165,000 tons per year of spodumene concentrate. The mine was previously placed on care and maintenance in November 2024 to preserve capital. MinRes plans to ramp up site activity in late May, with mining operations commencing in June and the first production of spodumene concentrate expected by July. The restart is anticipated to create approximately 370 jobs, with 110 roles filled through redeployment from other MinRes operations.
Why It's Important?
The restart of the Bald Hill lithium mine is significant as it reflects the growing demand for lithium, a critical component in battery production for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage. This move positions MinRes to capitalize on the resurgent lithium market, enhancing its role as a leader in the industry. The creation of new jobs also contributes positively to the local economy. As the global push for clean energy continues, the demand for lithium is expected to rise, making this restart a strategic move for MinRes to meet the increasing market needs.
What's Next?
MinRes plans to achieve full production capacity by the second quarter of the 2027 financial year. The company will continue to leverage its integrated build-own-operate model to manage mining, crushing, processing, and haulage at Bald Hill. The first shipment from the Port of Esperance is expected in the first quarter of the 2027 financial year. As the lithium market continues to grow, MinRes is well-positioned to expand its operations and potentially explore further opportunities in the lithium sector.
