What's Happening?
nDreams has announced that its free-to-play multiplayer VR shooter, Frenzies, will be shutting down on April 7, 2026. The decision comes after the company was unable to achieve the necessary player numbers to sustain the game long-term. Frenzies, developed
by Near Light, was launched in Early Access on Quest in October 2024, with a planned PlayStation VR2 port that was later canceled. As a final gesture to players, nDreams is offering one thousand 'Fundz' to anyone who logs in before the shutdown, and all in-game items and cosmetics will be priced at one Fundz. Players who made purchases with real money can apply for refunds.
Why It's Important?
The closure of Frenzies highlights the challenges faced by VR game developers in maintaining player engagement and financial viability. Despite the growing interest in VR gaming, sustaining a player base large enough to support ongoing development and server costs remains difficult. This situation underscores the competitive nature of the gaming industry, where even innovative and well-received games can struggle to find a foothold. The shutdown also reflects broader trends in the gaming market, where free-to-play models must balance monetization with player retention.
What's Next?
Players who have invested in Frenzies will need to seek refunds for their purchases, and the shutdown may prompt discussions within the VR gaming community about the sustainability of similar projects. nDreams may need to reassess its strategy for future VR titles, potentially focusing on more sustainable business models or diversifying its game offerings. The industry will likely continue to explore ways to enhance player engagement and retention in the competitive VR market.
