What's Happening?
Sun Life of Canada (Philippines), Inc. is set to expand its sales force and deepen bancassurance partnerships as it transitions to new leadership. Jose Vicente 'JJ' Moreno will take over as CEO on April 1, succeeding Benedict Sison, who will remain as chairman
of Sun Life Philippines Holding Co. and the Sun Life Foundation, Inc. Moreno, who joined Sun Life last year as president of its life insurance business, aims to strengthen the company's distribution system, particularly its agency force, and enhance its use of digital tools. The company plans to maximize its bancassurance partnerships, including a joint venture with Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. through Sun Life Grepa Financial, Inc. This leadership change comes as insurance penetration in the Philippines remains low, with premiums as a share of GDP at 1.78% to 1.79% last year.
Why It's Important?
The leadership transition at Sun Life Philippines is significant as it addresses the low insurance penetration in the country, which presents both a challenge and an opportunity for growth. By expanding its sales force and leveraging bancassurance partnerships, Sun Life aims to increase its market share and improve insurance coverage. The focus on digital tools and professionalizing advisory roles could enhance customer engagement and retention, crucial for long-term success. This move could also set a precedent for other insurers in the region to adopt similar strategies, potentially leading to increased competition and innovation in the insurance sector.
What's Next?
Under Moreno's leadership, Sun Life plans to continue investing in digital platforms to support client onboarding and policy service, while maintaining face-to-face distribution. The company will measure performance not just by premium growth but also by policy quality and retention, with persistency ratios as a key metric. As the company strengthens its distribution and advisory capabilities, it may attract more talent and improve customer outcomes, positioning itself for sustained growth in a market with significant untapped potential.
