What's Happening?
Renesas is expanding its Gallium Nitride (GaN) production capabilities by acquiring multiple Planetary G5+C MOCVD systems from Aixtron. This move is in response to the increasing demand for GaN technology across various power electronics applications.
Since acquiring Transphorm in June 2024, Renesas has been accelerating the deployment of GaN technology in sectors such as e-mobility, automotive, advanced Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, fast-charging infrastructure, AI data center power architectures, and renewable energy. The expansion aims to enable efficient and compact power conversion at scale. Rohan Samsi, VP of the GaN business division at Renesas, highlighted GaN as a key growth driver for their Power Business, emphasizing the importance of building on the proven Planetary platform originally introduced at Transphorm.
