What's Happening?
Inmarsat Maritime's NexusWave, a fully managed connectivity service, has received Cyber Security Type Approval from ClassNK. This certification confirms that NexusWave complies with the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) cyber
security standard, Unified Requirement UR E27. The certification process involved a thorough assessment of NexusWave's onboard Information and Communication Technology (ICT) architecture and equipment. ClassNK's evaluation verified that the system meets the mandatory requirements for cyber resilience, ensuring that shipboard systems are designed to mitigate the effects of cyber incidents. Gert-Jan Panken, General Manager and Vice President of Inmarsat Maritime, emphasized the importance of cyber resilience for shipowners, noting that the certification reinforces their commitment to operational confidence and compliance at sea.
Why It's Important?
The certification of NexusWave by ClassNK is significant for the maritime industry as it underscores the growing importance of cyber security in maritime operations. As ships become increasingly reliant on digital systems, ensuring these systems are secure is crucial to prevent disruptions that could impact safety and reliability. This certification not only enhances the credibility of Inmarsat's services but also sets a benchmark for other maritime technology providers. It highlights the industry's shift towards adopting robust cyber security measures to protect critical maritime infrastructure, which is vital for maintaining global trade and transportation networks.
What's Next?
Following the certification, Inmarsat Maritime is likely to see increased adoption of its NexusWave service among shipowners seeking to enhance their cyber resilience. The certification may also prompt other maritime technology providers to pursue similar approvals, fostering a more secure maritime environment. ClassNK's ongoing commitment to verifying and certifying maritime technologies suggests that further advancements in cyber security standards and practices can be expected, potentially leading to new regulations and requirements for the industry.
