What's Happening?
The Texas Book Festival has announced the creation of Burro Libro Press, a new publishing imprint aimed at debut literary fiction by emerging writers with strong ties to Texas. This initiative is in collaboration with Deep Vellum Publishing, Letterpress
PLAY, and the Tejemos Foundation. The imprint will publish one new title annually, selected through a prize contest. Submissions will be reviewed by Deep Vellum's editorial team, with a shortlist advancing to a broader panel. The first submission cycle opens on June 1, and the inaugural title is expected in fall 2027. The initiative is part of the festival's broader mission to support literary culture and was announced alongside the establishment of the Laura Bush Legacy Fund, an endowment to keep the festival free and open to the public.
Why It's Important?
This new imprint represents a significant opportunity for emerging writers with connections to Texas, providing them with a platform to publish their first works. By focusing on debut literary fiction, the Texas Book Festival is addressing a critical gap in the literary ecosystem, where many writers struggle to get their first book published. The initiative not only supports individual authors but also enriches the cultural landscape by bringing diverse voices and stories to the public. The partnership with established entities like Deep Vellum ensures professional development and quality publication, potentially setting a new standard for literary support programs.
What's Next?
The first cycle of submissions for the Burro Libro Press imprint will open on June 1, 2026, and close on June 30, 2026. Authors with meaningful ties to Texas are encouraged to submit their manuscripts. The selection process will culminate with the announcement of finalists in November 2026, and the winning manuscript will be chosen by the end of the year. The selected author will receive editorial development, a print run, an audiobook, a cash prize, and promotional opportunities at the Texas Book Festival Weekend in 2027.
