What's Happening?
Highland Heritage Woodworks (HHW), an Aberdeenshire-based company, is expanding its timber production capabilities with the installation of a new biomass-powered lumber drying kiln and a handheld timber grading machine. This development is supported by a £33,000 grant from Scottish Forestry, which covers a portion of the costs for the new equipment. The company, known for its bespoke carpentry and high-quality Scottish timber products, aims to enhance its processing, drying, and grading capacity for Scottish softwoods. The new equipment will allow HHW to reduce reliance on imported materials, strengthen its supply chain, and support local employment. The company sources timber from local estates and independent contractors, contributing to the rural
economy. With the new equipment, HHW plans to increase its workforce from 12 to around 20 employees over the next 12 to 18 months.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of Highland Heritage Woodworks is significant for the local economy and the Scottish timber industry. By increasing its capacity to process and grade locally sourced timber, HHW is reducing dependence on imported materials, which can lead to cost savings and a more sustainable supply chain. This move supports local employment and economic growth, as the company plans to hire additional staff. Furthermore, the investment in new equipment allows HHW to develop new products and markets, adding value to Scottish timber and promoting the use of home-grown wood. The support from Scottish Forestry highlights the importance of investing in local enterprises to maximize the economic and environmental benefits of forestry across Scotland.
What's Next?
Highland Heritage Woodworks plans to continue its growth by expanding its workforce and increasing its production capabilities. The company aims to hire more employees as its sawmilling, kilning, and carpentry activities grow. With the new equipment, HHW is well-positioned to explore new markets and develop innovative products, further enhancing its reputation for high-quality Scottish timber. The support from Scottish Forestry and Scottish Enterprise underscores the potential for local businesses to thrive with modest funding, creating new opportunities in the timber supply chain and strengthening the rural economy.
