What's Happening?
Polestar, a Swedish automaker, is adopting sustainability practices from the fashion industry to improve its vehicle development, production, and ownership processes. Fredrika Klarén, Head of Sustainability
at Polestar, is leveraging her experience from the fashion industry to implement a more transparent and efficient auditing system for the company's supply chain. This approach involves using third-party organizations to conduct audits, allowing suppliers to share results with multiple customers, thereby reducing audit fatigue and enhancing transparency. Currently, 45% of Polestar's suppliers, particularly those at high risk of negative impact, are audited under this new system.
Why It's Important?
Polestar's initiative to model its sustainability practices after the fashion industry represents a significant shift in the automotive sector's approach to environmental responsibility. By focusing on transparency and efficiency in its supply chain, Polestar aims to mitigate risks associated with corruption and opaque practices, particularly in the metals and minerals sectors. This move not only positions Polestar as a leader in sustainable automotive practices but also sets a benchmark for other automakers to follow. As the industry faces increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact, such innovative approaches could drive broader changes across the sector.
