What's Happening?
Mars Snacking has announced a $100 million investment to expand its headquarters in Chicago, which will result in the creation of over 600 jobs. The expansion includes opening a new regional office in Fulton Market and taking over the former Kellanova
headquarters in River North. This move is part of Mars Snacking's strategy to grow its corporate presence beyond its Goose Island campus. The expansion is incentivized by state tax credits and follows Mars' recent $36 billion acquisition of Kellanova, which added brands like Pringles and Cheez-It to its portfolio.
Why It's Important?
This expansion is a significant boost for the local economy, providing hundreds of new jobs and reinforcing Chicago's status as a major business hub. It reflects the strength of Illinois' workforce and business environment, as noted by Governor JB Pritzker. The investment also underscores Mars Snacking's commitment to its Chicago operations, which have been a key part of its growth strategy since acquiring Wrigley in 2008. The expansion is expected to enhance Mars Snacking's capabilities in research and development, further solidifying its position in the competitive snack food industry.
What's Next?
Mars Snacking plans to complete the expansion by December 2027, with the new offices serving as hubs for its Accelerator Division. The company will be eligible for $42.8 million in tax credits over 15 years under the state's Economic Development for a Growing Economy program. This initiative offers annual corporate tax credits to businesses that create jobs and invest in Illinois. The expansion is part of a broader trend of companies investing in the region, as seen with Hyundai Translead's recent announcement to create 2,500 jobs in Will County.
