What's Happening?
Mars, Incorporated and Olam Food Ingredients (OFI) have announced a five-year strategic collaboration to advance climate-smart cocoa production in Ecuador. This initiative, running from 2025 to 2029, aims
to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The partnership focuses on scaling regenerative agriculture practices across their shared cocoa supply chain, emphasizing reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving farm productivity, and strengthening farmer resilience. The program will support over 960 farmers across key cocoa-growing regions, transitioning from traditional monoculture systems to multistrata agroforestry models.
Why It's Important?
This collaboration between Mars and OFI is significant for the global cocoa industry, as it addresses the pressing need for sustainable agricultural practices. By promoting regenerative agriculture, the initiative aims to enhance biodiversity, improve soil health, and boost yields, contributing to a more sustainable cocoa ecosystem. The project also supports the livelihoods of farmers by providing tools and training to implement low-carbon practices. This effort aligns with broader industry goals to reduce environmental impact and ensure the long-term viability of cocoa production.
