What's Happening?
Lloyd’s Register (LR) has granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) to Wison New Energies for their innovative floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) design. This design features an internal turret mooring system, specifically tailored for harsh
offshore environments. The FPSO concept is intended to address the challenges posed by demanding metocean conditions, where internal turret systems are often utilized. These systems require intricate integration between the hull, mooring, risers, and topside systems. The approval from LR is part of a concept-stage review that aims to reduce technical uncertainties and support early project decision-making by identifying key technical and safety considerations. Ian Crehan, Global Head of Energies Solutions at Lloyd’s Register, emphasized the importance of independent assurance at the concept stage to reduce uncertainty and allow projects to proceed with greater technical confidence.
Why It's Important?
The approval of Wison’s FPSO concept by Lloyd’s Register is significant for the offshore energy industry, particularly in regions with harsh environmental conditions. This development supports Wison’s strategy to create standardized FPSO designs that can be deployed more rapidly in challenging offshore areas. By reducing technical uncertainties early in the project lifecycle, companies can avoid costly mistakes and delays. This approval not only enhances Wison’s portfolio but also positions them to meet a substantial portion of the global demand for FPSO units. The ability to deploy these systems efficiently in harsh environments could lead to increased energy production capabilities and potentially lower costs for energy companies operating in these regions.
What's Next?
With the design for harsh environment FPSO now completed, Wison New Energies is poised to expand its offerings in the FPSO market. The company has already developed standard FPSO and Gas type FPSO designs, which positions them to address approximately 90% of the current global FPSO demand. The next steps for Wison may involve seeking further approvals and certifications for their designs, as well as engaging with potential clients interested in deploying these systems. Additionally, the company may focus on refining their designs to enhance efficiency and reduce costs further, making their offerings more attractive to energy companies operating in challenging offshore environments.
