What's Happening?
Rich Turner, the executive director of the Rochester Technology & Manufacturing Association (RTMA), is optimistic about the future of manufacturing in Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes region. Turner highlights a growing pipeline of companies and expanding
operations as indicators of long-term growth potential. Since assuming full leadership of the RTMA in April, Turner has focused on strengthening the region's advanced manufacturing talent pipeline. This includes initiatives like the Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship Program, which connects high school students with paid co-ops and job-shadowing opportunities. The RTMA has also launched career exploration events and pre-apprenticeship programs to prepare the next generation of skilled workers. Turner emphasizes that manufacturing offers stable, high-paying career opportunities without the burden of significant student debt.
Why It's Important?
The growth of the manufacturing sector in Rochester is significant for the local economy, providing job opportunities and supporting regional development. Turner's initiatives aim to address the skills gap in advanced manufacturing by fostering a new generation of skilled workers. This focus on workforce development is crucial as it aligns with broader economic trends emphasizing the importance of technical skills and vocational training. By promoting apprenticeships and education, the RTMA is helping to ensure that the manufacturing industry remains competitive and sustainable, benefiting both employers and employees in the region.
