What's Happening?
Henkel has announced the achievement of carbon-neutral production at its Adhesive Technologies manufacturing facilities in Kurkumbh, India, and Gebkim, Türkiye. The company has eliminated Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by replacing fossil fuel-based systems
with high-efficiency electric systems powered by renewable energy. This transition involved significant upgrades to energy infrastructure, including the installation of advanced heat exchangers and enhanced electrical capacity. The initiative has resulted in the elimination of approximately 11,300 tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions annually at the Kurkumbh facility and 956 tonnes at the Gebkim plant.
Why It's Important?
Henkel's achievement of carbon-neutral production is a significant step towards sustainable industrial practices. By eliminating fossil fuel consumption and transitioning to renewable energy, Henkel is setting a precedent for other companies in the manufacturing sector. This move not only reduces the company's carbon footprint but also aligns with global efforts to combat climate change. The success of these initiatives demonstrates the feasibility of scaling fossil-fuel-free manufacturing across regions, potentially influencing industry standards and encouraging other companies to adopt similar practices.
