What's Happening?
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service has released the 2024 Census of Horticultural Specialties report, which now includes data on mushrooms and hemp. This report is the only comprehensive source of production and sales
data for floriculture, nursery, and specialty crops in the U.S. The inclusion of mushrooms and hemp has contributed to an increase in horticultural sales, which totaled $18.3 billion in 2024. The report highlights that horticultural production is concentrated in 10 states, with California, Florida, and Oregon leading in sales. The census also notes a rise in the number of horticulture operations and an increase in sales across various commodities compared to 2019.
Why It's Important?
The addition of mushrooms and hemp to the USDA's horticultural sales data reflects the growing significance of these crops in the U.S. agricultural landscape. This expansion in data collection provides valuable insights into the economic contributions of horticulture, which is crucial for policy-making and industry development. The report's findings indicate a robust growth in the horticultural sector, driven by increased consumer demand and diversification of crops. This growth has implications for farmers, investors, and policymakers, as it highlights the potential for further development and investment in these areas.
