What's Happening?
Brianna Mims, an artist and abolitionist based in Los Angeles, is set to perform 'What Hangs, What Shapeshifts Between Worlds and Time' at the Audubon Center in Debs Park on May 9, 2026. The performance is part of Mims' ongoing project, Marooning Bodies,
which explores future histories through performance, public art, and social practice. The event will feature three movements guided by herbal tinctures and a Collective Prayer Stool, created in collaboration with Botanica Cimarron and McBog Design. The performance aims to create a space for collective reflection and transformation, focusing on themes of grief and community.
Why It's Important?
This performance highlights the intersection of art, social practice, and community engagement. Mims' work challenges traditional notions of performance by incorporating elements of ritual and collective participation. The focus on grief as a transformative process encourages audiences to engage with difficult emotions in a supportive environment. By creating spaces for collective reflection, Mims' work fosters community connections and encourages dialogue around social issues. The performance also contributes to the cultural landscape of Los Angeles, offering a unique artistic experience that blends performance with social commentary.
What's Next?
Following the performance, the Collective Prayer Stool and accompanying prayer book will remain as ongoing elements of the Marooning Bodies project. Mims plans to continue developing the project through workshops and installations, expanding its reach and impact. The performance may inspire further collaborations and discussions around the role of art in social change. As Mims continues to explore themes of community and transformation, her work is likely to influence future artistic and social practices.
