What's Happening?
Sherman Library & Gardens in Corona del Mar has announced the opening of a new restaurant, Hazeltine's, set to debut in late summer 2027. The restaurant will be managed by Damian Orozco, known for his Tea House on Los Rios in San Juan Capistrano. Hazeltine's will offer
brunch, lunch, dinner, a full-service bar, and a monthly afternoon tea experience. The restaurant is named after Moses Hazeltine Sherman, the library's namesake, and will occupy a new space inside a reconstructed building facing Pacific Coast Highway. The library, founded in 1966, is temporarily closed for construction, but the gardens remain open. The new restaurant aims to provide a purveyor-to-table cuisine with seasonal ingredients, enhancing the guest experience at the gardens.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of Hazeltine's at Sherman Library & Gardens represents a significant development for the local community and the institution itself. It promises to enhance the cultural and culinary offerings in Corona del Mar, attracting visitors from across Southern California. The partnership with Damian Orozco, known for his hospitality and culinary expertise, is expected to elevate the dining experience, potentially increasing foot traffic and engagement with the library and gardens. This move aligns with broader trends in the hospitality industry, where unique dining experiences are increasingly sought after. The restaurant's focus on community involvement and legacy building may also strengthen local ties and support the institution's mission.
What's Next?
Ahead of the official opening in 2027, Sherman Library & Gardens will host several Hazeltine's afternoon tea experiences, providing guests a preview of the restaurant's offerings. These events are scheduled for June 14, July 19, August 16, September 13, and October 18, each with themed decor and menus. The tea service includes organic teas, seasonal sandwiches, petit fours, and scones, with options for vegetarian and gluten-free diets. The restaurant's development is part of a larger renovation project at the library, which includes a new two-story structure with a view of the refurbished tea garden. As construction progresses, the library will remain closed, but the gardens will continue to welcome visitors.
