What's Happening?
RhinoLeap Productions is staging 'The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)' at Asheboro's Memorial Park, offering a unique theatrical experience on a rural tennis court. The production, which runs through May 24, features three actors performing
all of Shakespeare's plays in just 90 minutes. Executive Director Jeremy Skidmore describes the play as a fast-paced comedy filled with slapstick and pop culture references. The company, which moved its headquarters from Winston-Salem to Asheboro in 2017, aims to make theater accessible to rural communities. The performances are designed to be inclusive, with options for both ticketed seating inside the fence and free viewing from outside.
Why It's Important?
This production highlights the efforts to make theater more accessible to rural communities, which often lack such cultural opportunities. By utilizing unconventional spaces like a tennis court, RhinoLeap Productions is breaking traditional barriers and engaging new audiences. This approach not only democratizes access to the arts but also fosters community engagement and cultural enrichment. The initiative could inspire other theater companies to explore similar outreach efforts, potentially revitalizing interest in the arts in underserved areas.
