What's Happening?
The third edition of the Climate Reality Check report has been released, evaluating the depiction of climate change in feature films. Compiled by Good Energy, the report assesses whether climate change is present in the narrative and acknowledged by characters.
This year, 16 Oscar-nominated films were eligible, with five passing the criteria: 'Arco,' 'Bugonia,' 'Jurassic World Rebirth,' 'The Lost Bus,' and 'Sirāt.' These films represent a diverse range of genres and styles, from intimate animations to blockbuster spectacles, demonstrating the versatility of climate narratives in cinema.
Why It's Important?
The increasing inclusion of climate change themes in mainstream cinema reflects a growing awareness and urgency around environmental issues. By integrating climate narratives into popular films, the industry can influence public perception and encourage dialogue about the climate crisis. The report's findings highlight the role of filmmakers in shaping cultural conversations and the potential for cinema to drive social change. As more films address climate change, audiences may become more informed and motivated to engage with environmental issues.
