What's Happening?
A recent study published in the journal Health Psychology indicates that individuals who adhere to a low-variety diet may experience more significant weight loss compared to those who frequently change their meals. The research involved 112 participants
with overweight or obesity, who were part of a structured behavioral weight loss program. Participants tracked their food intake and had regular weigh-ins. The study found that those with a consistent diet lost an average of 5.9% of their body weight, while those with more varied diets lost 4.3%. The researchers concluded that maintaining a steady calorie intake and a repetitive diet could help establish sustainable habits for weight loss.
Why It's Important?
The findings challenge the conventional wisdom that a varied diet is essential for weight loss, suggesting instead that consistency may be more beneficial. This could impact dietary recommendations and weight management strategies, emphasizing the importance of routine in achieving weight loss goals. The study highlights the potential for low-variety diets to simplify meal planning and reduce the stress associated with constantly creating new meals, which could lead to better adherence to weight loss programs. This approach may particularly benefit individuals who find meal planning overwhelming, providing a straightforward method to support their weight management efforts.
