What's Happening?
Indonesian artist Dian Suci has been awarded the 10th edition of the Max Mara Art Prize for Women. The announcement was made during a ceremony in Venice, coinciding with the opening of the 2026 Venice Art Biennale. The prize, established in 2005, supports
emerging or midcareer female artists by providing them with a six-month residency in Italy to develop an ambitious project. Suci's work, which explores themes of political resistance and cultural resilience, particularly through the lens of spirituality and capitalism, impressed the jury. Her project, 'Crafting Spirit: Cultural Dialogues in Heritage and Practice,' will involve a comparative study of religious artisan traditions in Italy and Indonesia. The residency will take her to various Italian cities, including Assisi, Rome, Lecce, and Florence, where she will engage with local crafts and traditions.
Why It's Important?
The Max Mara Art Prize for Women plays a crucial role in promoting female artists at pivotal points in their careers, offering them a platform to explore and expand their artistic practices. Dian Suci's win is significant as it highlights the intersection of art, culture, and politics, particularly in how spirituality can serve as a form of resistance against capitalist and patriarchal systems. This recognition not only elevates Suci's work but also brings attention to the broader discourse on cultural resilience and the role of art in challenging societal norms. The prize's focus on international collaboration and cultural exchange underscores the importance of global dialogue in the arts.
What's Next?
Dian Suci will begin her residency in Italy, starting in Assisi, where she will explore the lifestyle of Franciscan monks. Her journey will continue to Rome, Lecce, and Florence, where she will engage with various crafts and traditions. The culmination of her residency will be showcased in solo exhibitions at the Museum MACAN in Jakarta and Collezione Maramotti in Italy in 2027. This opportunity will allow Suci to deepen her research and create works that reflect her experiences and insights gained during her time in Italy.
