What's Happening?
The 38th USC Libraries Scripter Awards recognized the screenwriters and authors behind 'One Battle After Another' and Netflix's 'Death By Lightning'. Paul Thomas Anderson and Thomas Pynchon won for the film adaptation of Pynchon's 1990 novel, continuing the film's success following wins at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards. In the episodic series category, Mike Makowsky and Candice Millard were honored for 'Death by Lightning', based on Millard's book about President James Garfield's assassination. The event, held at USC's Town and Gown ballroom, also awarded crime writer Michael Connelly with the USC Libraries Scripter Literary Achievement Award.
Why It's Important?
The USC Scripter Awards highlight the importance of literary adaptations in film and television,
recognizing the collaborative efforts between authors and screenwriters. These awards can significantly boost the visibility and prestige of the winning works, potentially influencing their success in other award circuits like the Oscars. For the film industry, such recognition underscores the value of adapting literary works, which can lead to increased interest in both the original books and their screen adaptations. This can result in broader cultural and commercial impacts, benefiting authors, filmmakers, and audiences alike.
