What's Happening?
BME Metallurgy, in collaboration with Innospec, has developed a new coagulant, DEHSCOFIXSC12, to address challenges posed by colloidal silica in copper and cobalt leaching processes. This innovative solution has been successfully applied at MMG's Kinsevere mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Colloidal silica, a prevalent gangue mineral, can disrupt hydrometallurgical operations, leading to inefficiencies and potential shutdowns. The coagulant promotes coagulation of silica particles, improving extraction efficiency and reducing operational issues. The application at Kinsevere resulted in increased throughput, reduced suspended solids, and improved copper production and cathode quality.
Why It's Important?
The development of DEHSCOFIXSC12 represents a significant
advancement in addressing operational challenges in the mining sector, particularly for copper and cobalt producers. By improving extraction efficiency and reducing downtime, the coagulant enhances profitability and sustainability for mining operations. This innovation is crucial for African producers operating under tight margins, as it allows for better resource utilization and extends asset life. The ability to mitigate colloidal silica challenges also opens opportunities for processing difficult-to-treat ores, supporting the diversification into critical minerals essential for advanced technologies.
Beyond the Headlines
The successful application of DEHSCOFIXSC12 at Kinsevere highlights the potential for broader adoption across the mining industry. The coagulant's adaptability to other leach-based processes, such as uranium extraction, could lead to higher recovery rates and safer operations. This innovation supports Africa's diversification into critical minerals, aligning with global trends towards sustainable and efficient resource utilization. The reduction of operational bottlenecks and cost savings make African projects more attractive to investors, potentially driving further investment and development in the region.
