What's Happening?
The Competition Commission has approved the acquisition of the Goedehoop North Colliery by GHN Resources from Thungela Operations, a subsidiary of Thungela Resources. The Goedehoop North Colliery, located in Mpumalanga, has been non-operational since
December 2025. Historically, it was an export-focused coal mine, primarily producing thermal coal for export, with some volumes sold domestically. GHN Resources, which mines and markets coal from the Black Wattle opencast thermal coal mine, will now manage the Goedehoop North Colliery. The Commission concluded that the acquisition is unlikely to significantly reduce competition in the market and does not raise public interest concerns.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition is significant as it represents a strategic move by GHN Resources to expand its coal mining operations in South Africa. By acquiring the Goedehoop North Colliery, GHN Resources can potentially increase its production capacity and market share in the coal industry. The approval by the Competition Commission suggests that the transaction is not expected to negatively impact competition or public interest, which is crucial for maintaining a balanced market environment. This development could also have implications for the coal export market, as the Goedehoop North Colliery was historically focused on exports.
