What's Happening?
BIMCO's Documentary Committee has introduced a new time charter party, CO2TIME 2026, specifically designed for the maritime transport of liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2). This development is in response to the growing carbon capture, utilization, and storage
(CCUS) projects, necessitating a standardized contractual framework for maritime transport. CO2TIME 2026 is the first of its kind, tailored for LCO2 carriage but flexible enough to accommodate other liquefied gases like LPG. The charter party aims to bridge the gap between the emerging CO2 trade and established gas shipping practices by providing a familiar time charter structure while addressing the unique technical, operational, and regulatory challenges of CO2 transport. The drafting committee focused on retaining well-established time charter principles, adapting them to the specific characteristics of CO2 transport to reduce contractual uncertainty and support stakeholders entering this market.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of CO2TIME 2026 is significant as it provides a much-needed standardized framework for the burgeoning CO2 transport sector, which is crucial for the success of CCUS projects. By offering a familiar contractual structure, it reduces uncertainty and facilitates the entry of shipowners, charterers, financiers, and project developers into the CO2 transport market. This development could accelerate the adoption of CCUS technologies, which are vital for reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change. The charter party's flexibility to accommodate other liquefied gases also broadens its applicability, potentially benefiting the wider gas shipping industry.
