What's Happening?
Stellantis NV and Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology Co., Ltd. are exploring the expansion of their strategic partnership to enhance electric vehicle production in Europe. Stellantis, which acquired a 21% stake
in Leapmotor in October 2023, is considering increasing production at its Figueruelas plant in Zaragoza, Spain. The plan includes adding a new line for manufacturing Opel's new C-SUV BEV model and Leapmotor's C-SUV B10 model. This initiative is part of Stellantis' strategy to grow the European market for battery electric vehicles by leveraging competitive LPMI-sourced components to enhance affordability. The partnership aims to boost price competitiveness by utilizing the Chinese New Energy Vehicle ecosystem and European supply chain capabilities.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of Stellantis and Leapmotor's partnership is significant for the European electric vehicle market. By increasing production capacity and leveraging competitive components, Stellantis aims to make electric vehicles more affordable for European consumers. This move could strengthen Stellantis' position in the competitive electric vehicle market and support the transition to sustainable transportation. Additionally, the collaboration highlights the growing importance of international partnerships in the automotive industry, as companies seek to combine resources and expertise to meet the increasing demand for electric vehicles.
What's Next?
Stellantis and Leapmotor are conducting feasibility studies and pre-development work to finalize the expansion plans. The potential start of production for the new models at the Figueruelas plant is under evaluation, with a possible commencement in 2028. The companies are also discussing the transfer of the Villaverde plant's ownership to LPMI's Spanish subsidiary, which would align with Made-in-Europe requirements. The outcome of these discussions and the execution of definitive agreements will determine the future trajectory of the partnership and its impact on the European electric vehicle market.
