What's Happening?
DIGITAL has announced a $4.0 million co-investment in Novamera Inc.'s Surgical Mining technology, an AI-powered, low-impact mining method aimed at enhancing domestic critical-mineral resources in North America. This investment will support the development
of copper and rare earth element (REE) technology applications and establish a permitting pathway in Ontario. The project, in collaboration with Northstar Gold Corp. and Micon International, seeks to demonstrate a scalable model for faster, lower-risk mine development. Novamera's technology integrates advanced imaging, AI-driven simulation, and robotics to target mineralized zones, aiming to reduce environmental impact and capital requirements.
Why It's Important?
Securing reliable domestic sources of critical minerals is crucial for North America's electrification, defense modernization, and digital infrastructure advancements. Traditional mining methods face challenges in meeting current demands, with copper projected to face a significant supply gap within the next decade. Novamera's Surgical Mining technology offers a solution by enabling faster production with minimal environmental disturbance. This initiative not only supports North American manufacturing and energy security but also enhances industrial competitiveness by reducing reliance on foreign mineral sources.
What's Next?
The co-investment builds on Novamera's previous successful project, which validated the Surgical Mining process. The current phase aims to further advance the technology, with a detailed case study expected soon. The project will focus on demonstrating the technology's effectiveness in real-world conditions, potentially leading to broader deployment across North America. As the demand for critical minerals grows, the success of this project could pave the way for similar initiatives, strengthening North America's mineral supply chain.
