Nishan Velupillay, a 25-year-old player of Indian origin, made his FIFA World Cup debut for Australia in their 2-0 victory over Turkey in a Group D match. Velupillay, who was introduced in the 61st minute, is one of seventeen players making their World Cup debut for the Socceroos.
He was included in the final 26-man squad by coach Tony Popovic. Velupillay's international career began in October 2024 during a World Cup qualifier against China, where he scored shortly after being substituted in. Since then, he has earned seven caps and scored three goals, all in World Cup qualifiers. Velupillay was born in Melbourne to a Sri Lankan Tamil father and an Anglo-Indian mother. He progressed through the youth ranks at Glen Eira FC and Melbourne Victory, where he currently plays in the A-League.
