What's Happening?
A heritage tour of Underground Railroad sites in the South Suburban area is scheduled for Saturday, June 6. Organized by the Midwest Underground Railroad Network, the tour will provide participants with historical insights into the routes used by escaped
slaves seeking freedom before the Civil War. The event will begin at Sandridge Nature Center in South Holland and will run from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participants will travel by bus to various sites, with some walking required. The tour is free, but due to limited seating, reservations are necessary. The Forest Preserves of Cook County sponsors this educational program.
Why It's Important?
This tour offers a valuable educational opportunity to learn about a significant part of American history, particularly the struggles and resilience of those who sought freedom through the Underground Railroad. It serves as a reminder of the region's historical role in the abolitionist movement and provides context for ongoing discussions about racial justice and equality. By engaging with this history, participants can gain a deeper understanding of the past and its impact on present-day social issues. The event also highlights the importance of preserving historical sites and stories for future generations.
