What's Happening?
Former Germany midfielder Toni Kroos has called on sports stars to unite for peace and respect during his acceptance of the Sporting Inspiration Award at the Laureus World Sports Awards. The award, which recognizes achievements beyond sporting success,
was presented to Kroos at the Palacio de Cibeles in Madrid. Kroos, who founded the Toni Kroos Foundation in 2015 to support seriously ill children and hospices in Germany, emphasized the importance of standing together for the right values amidst global turmoil. He highlighted the role of sports in promoting peace and respect, noting that while many global issues are beyond individual control, personal conduct and values are within reach. Kroos is only the fourth recipient of this prestigious award, which was first introduced in 2017.
Why It's Important?
Kroos's call for unity and peace in sports underscores the influential role athletes can play in addressing global issues. By leveraging their platforms, sports figures can promote values of peace and respect, potentially influencing public discourse and behavior. The recognition of Kroos's efforts through the Sporting Inspiration Award highlights the broader impact sports can have beyond the field, encouraging athletes to engage in social and humanitarian causes. This approach not only enhances the social responsibility of sports figures but also inspires fans and communities to adopt similar values, fostering a more harmonious society.
