What's Happening?
Midsummer Studios, founded in May 2024 by veteran developers from games like Sid Meier’s Civilization, XCOM, and The Sims, is set to shut down. Co-founder and creative director Jake Solomon announced the closure, expressing pride in the studio and its game, 'Burbank.' The game, described as a blend of 'Life Sims' and 'The Truman Show,' aimed to allow players to create and share stories and characters. Despite the innovative concept, the studio will close its doors, marking the end of its development efforts.
Why It's Important?
The closure of Midsummer Studios reflects the volatile nature of the gaming industry, where even experienced developers face challenges in sustaining operations. The shutdown highlights the difficulties small studios encounter in securing
funding and market presence amidst fierce competition. The loss of 'Burbank' as a potential game offering underscores the impact on creative diversity within the industry. This development may influence other small studios to reassess their strategies and seek more sustainable business models to survive in a competitive market.
