What's Happening?
Sugar, a five-time World Dog Surf champion and the first animal inducted into the Surfers’ Hall of Fame, is currently battling cancer. Her owner, Ryan Rustan, has been actively managing her treatment, which includes vet visits, special food, and medications.
Sugar, a 16-year-old rescue therapy dog, has been a significant figure in surf therapy foundations and has visited veterans at the VA Hospital in Long Beach. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover the costs of her treatment, raising over $11,000 so far. Sugar's legacy in the surfing community was solidified in 2024 when her paw prints were added to the Surfers’ Hall of Fame in Huntington Beach.
Why It's Important?
Sugar's story highlights the emotional and financial challenges faced by pet owners dealing with serious illnesses in their animals. As a beloved figure in the surfing community, Sugar has brought joy and therapeutic benefits to many, underscoring the role of animals in human well-being. The fundraising efforts reflect the community's support and the broader societal value placed on animal companions. This case also brings attention to the costs associated with pet healthcare, a growing concern for many pet owners in the U.S.
