Nvidia, in collaboration with several partners, is set to pilot a project involving the establishment of approximately 25 small data centers located next to power substations across the United States. This initiative aims to address the growing energy
demands of AI technologies by utilizing spare capacity at local substations. The strategy involves load balancing, where compute power is increased at substations with lesser load and decreased at those with higher demand. This approach allows for the efficient use of available power without reducing overall consumption. Nvidia's senior director of energy, Marc Spieler, highlighted the potential of utilizing the spare capacity of the 55,000 substations in the U.S., each with varying megawatt availability.

The move by Nvidia underscores the increasing energy demands posed by the AI revolution, with data centers projected to consume up to 17% of U.S. electricity by 2030.
